This large group staff photo shoot for Northwest Trustee & Management Services is a fantastic example of crafting unique photography to suit your brand. This firm sports an impressive mountain peak for their logo, and nature imagery dominates their website, so it is fitting that we shot their latest round of staff photos at Riverside State Park: an ideal location to represent the Pacific Northwest.

It was important to the client that their trust officers and support staff be represented equally to represent their family culture. Megan chose a location that would create an interesting depth for the image: a rocky hillside where she could arrange the staff of thirteen into a few different tiers, rather than in a single line. The slope was visually compelling but made lighting a challenge with no level surface, thus necessitating my extra set of hands. Field trip!

I always enjoy getting to assist on commercial photo shoots, putting my graphic design duties on hold and escaping my desk for a short time to see Megan and her camera in action. This shoot really opened my eyes to how much work goes into professionally lighting a shot such as this, and it was extra hands-on with no flat surfaces to rest a light stand. The final image was the result of editing together a dozen separately lit images, each strategically highlighting a section of the group. The resulting composite is dynamic and bold, and Megan captured a few extra shots to illustrate the difference that crafted light makes.

On the left is what the same composition looked like with no lighting at all (other than the sun of course). On the right, is the result of a single front light set back for the whole group:

By strategically placing one of our remote-triggered strobes to light small sections and individuals of the group at a time, Megan was able to achieve a much more dynamic and striking final group photo (she edited me out for some reason).

The staff did a great job once again of dressing to their brand’s palette and the resulting photos were cohesive and will look fabulous on their website. And perhaps most importantly, everyone had fun in the process!
