Last week, we had the pleasure of making a presentation at the Spokane Authors & Self-Publishers monthly meeting, about our various author services and how to promote your book with creative multimedia. They were an impressive group of writers with a massive collection of books between them all, and it was wonderful to get to expound on one of my greatest passions here at Rogue Heart Media: our author services. With a history as a writer and bookseller, I am a voracious reader. And as an artist and a student of business, I have done extensive research on the publishing industry, book design, and book promotion. Anytime I get to work with an author, it’s a treat!

For self-publishers, budget varies, so we identified a book marketing pyramid that authors can assess when considering which author services to invest in. Though authors should arguably have everything in the pyramid (except perhaps a book trailer, which is kind of the cherry on top), the most vital elements to invest in professional services for are on the bottom.

One service that I’m really excited to be offering is our Custom Interior Formatting Template. Rather than designing the whole book interior in InDesign, I’ll format the title pages and first chapter in Word (which is an accepted format for most self-publishing printers and what most authors write with), setting up paragraph and heading styles that can be easily applied to the rest of the manuscript by the author, and providing any additional fonts that I’ve incorporated. This is more cost effective, results in a professionally designed manuscript, and the author doesn’t have to come back to me with inevitable edits to the text: she can just make the changes herself!

In tandem with this service, having your first chapter designed as a PDF is a great choice, as making it available for free download online is a powerful promotion that is sure to capture readers! This “free sample” approach takes the risk out of buying a book from an unknown author and it’s a highly sharable promotion that people will forward to their friends if they like what they’ve read. Hopefully they’ll be so sucked into the story after reading the first chapter, they won’t be able to stop themselves from buying your book so they can find out what happens next!

Getting your book into stores may be harder for authors who have self-published, but online it’s anyone’s game. That’s why it’s so important to invest in a professionally designed book cover and author photo and to create a solid marketing strategy. We can help with all of that. Our author services are a niche that we offer, but it’s just another version of the services we provide to our commercial clients. We can outfit you with a social media campaign to promote the sale of your book, equip you with printed promotional materials such as bookmarks and business cards, and formulate a digital marketing strategy that suits your needs.
